Slower retail sales and elevated rates stall growth sectors, keeping focus locked on central bank guidance.
U.S. equity markets sank across the board in the week ending August 21, 2026, with major indexes closing lower despite paring some losses during a late-week rebound. Investor sentiment was weighed down by rising long-term Treasury yields, ongoing scrutiny of sovereign debt issuances, and mixed economic data. The S&P 500 fell approximately 1.4% to 2.0% for the week, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.75%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average retreated 2.01%.
Small-Caps Continue to Show Strength
The S&P SmallCap 600 demonstrated clear relative resilience during the week, declining by a comparatively modest 0.65%. This relative strength extends across longer measurement periods as well. On a year-to-date basis, the S&P SmallCap 600 has gained 23.10%, significantly outpacing the large-cap S&P 500's return of 12.95% and the Nasdaq Composite's 14.10% advance. Over the trailing twelve-month period, the SmallCap 600 is up 37.50%, compared to a 22.32% gain for the broader market index. The persistent valuation discount of smaller companies, coupled with steady domestic demand, has supported this rotation into small-cap equities throughout the year to date.
Economic Indicators
Economic data released throughout the week presented a picture of domestic caution. U.S. retail sales contracted by 0.6% in the latest monthly report, marking the first decline in nine months and suggesting more cautious consumer discretionary spending. Housing starts dropped 12.4% and pending home sales softened further as mortgage rates remained steep. Labor markets showed underlying stability, with initial jobless claims edging down to 206,000 from the prior week's 212,000. The release of recent Federal Open Market Committee minutes confirmed the central bank's focus on inflation control, contributing to the 10-year Treasury yield rising seven basis points on the week to close near 4.71%. In response to fixed-income liquidity conditions, the U.S. Treasury expanded buyback operations for longer-dated maturities.
Notable Sector and Company Performers
Sector performance diverged significantly based on rate sensitivity and commodity exposure. Technology and growth stocks led weekly declines because elevated discount rates compressed long-duration equity multiples. Within the semiconductor space, Marvell Technology (MRVL) gained nearly 10% after announcing an expanded cloud-chip partnership. In industrials, Deere and Co. (DE) advanced over 4% after raising the lower end of its full-year guidance on strength in construction equipment. Conversely, Walmart (WMT) traded lower following a deceleration in comparable store sales growth. Energy markets saw upward momentum, with West Texas Intermediate crude climbing 6.6% on geopolitical supply disruptions, while gold rose 3.3%.
Looking Ahead
Regarding near-term market expectations, investors will be watching the upcoming Jackson Hole Economic Symposium for forward guidance on the trajectory of monetary policy. Market participants will be assessing whether second-half corporate earnings can withstand elevated borrowing costs and higher energy inputs.
For the long term, investors seem to be focused on the return on capital from artificial intelligence infrastructure investments and the durability of corporate operating margins amid sustained higher interest rates.
