But slowing retail sales and firm Treasury yields are tempering near-term sentiment.
For the week ending August 14, 2026, U.S. equity markets delivered mixed to positive performance which extended across small and large caps. The S&P SmallCap 600 Index did again outpace large-cap benchmarks, advancing 0.94% to close at 1,828.28. By comparison, the S&P 500 rose 0.36% to 7,785.76, the Nasdaq 100 gained 1.09%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.56%.
Year-to-date, the S&P SmallCap 600 is up 12.2%, trailing the large-cap S&P 500 (+13.7%) and Nasdaq Composite (+15.0%) as megacap tech and AI momentum drove earlier gains. Over the trailing twelve months, the S&P SmallCap 600 advanced 30.2%, reflecting ongoing recovery of the small company market segment.
Macroeconomic Drivers & Key Economic Releases
Moderating Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) data earlier in the week initially reinforced expectations of monetary policy stability. However, Friday's advance real retail sales report showed growth slowing to 1.65% year-over-year (down from 3.18% previously), signaling consumer deceleration.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose 6.4 basis points on the week to 4.69%, driven by curve steepening. Brent crude climbed 5.95% to $88.52 per barrel due to ongoing Middle Eastern shipping disruptions.
Applied Materials (AMAT) and Cisco (CSCO) reported quarterly beats, while Super Micro Computer (SMCI) and Nu Holdings (NU) posted better-than-expected results. Reddit (RDDT) saw sharp gains following confirmation of its entry into the S&P 500.
Sector Trends and Possible Trajectories
Outperformance in small and mid-cap indexes continues along a similar theme as in recent weeks, with further capital rotation into economically sensitive and interest-rate-sensitive equities, and market activity extending beyond concentrated megacap technology leadership.
Elevated crude oil supported energy issues, while traditional consumer discretionary names faced margin pressure from slower retail spending.
Upward pressure on long-term Treasury yields continues to act as a headwind for highly-leveraged corporate balance sheets.
What Are Investors Thinking?
In my view, market participants are assessing whether cooling retail spending points to a controlled economic normalization or a sharper aggregate demand slowdown. Concurrently, firm energy prices and sticky Treasury yields (near 4.70%) limit immediate expectations for aggressive Federal Reserve rate cuts.
Longer-term institutional focus remains on earnings sustainability outside the primary AI infrastructure complex. Investors are weighing whether small-cap valuations -- currently trading at quite attractive relative discounts -- can sustain their earnings growth trajectory if macroeconomic demand softens.
