Here's Doug's take on key market events and trends for the week ending September 4, 2026.
For the shortened trading week ending Friday, September 4, 2026, U.S. markets continued their long-haul navigation around macroeconomic data that reshuffled expectations regarding interest rate paths. Small-capitalization stocks continued showing resilience as investors headed into the holiday weekend.
S&P SmallCap 600 and Market Performance
The S&P SmallCap 600 index wrapped up the week at 1,765.09. Following mid-week softness where the index touched a low of 1,734.65 on September 1, small-caps staged a three-day recovery to close down just 0.14% from the prior Friday's close. But in relative terms, small-caps slightly outperformed large-caps late in the week as broad market benchmarks, including the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average, pulled back following Friday's labor data release.
On a year-to-date basis, the S&P SmallCap 600 pulled back slightly in the week to lag mega-cap tech stocks that drove broader gains earlier in 2026. Over the trailing twelve-month period, small-cap valuations continue to trade near their historical discount levels compared to large caps, primarily held back by higher borrowing costs and tighter credit conditions across regional banking.
Macroeconomic Indicators and Key News
The defining economic release was the August employment report published on 4 September 2026. Nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000, exceeding consensus expectations of 55,000. The robust labor reading lifted Treasury yields, with short- and intermediate-term yields reaching 52-week highs, including the two-year yield climbing to 4.374% and the five-year yield rising to 4.545%.
This was enough for market participants to adjust their interest rate probabilities for the Federal Open Market Committee's upcoming September meeting, as persistent labor demand is reducing the urgency of rapid monetary easing.
S&P Dow Jones Indices released its quarterly rebalancing announcement on September 4, detailing upcoming component adjustments across the S&P 500, S&P MidCap 400, and S&P SmallCap 600 taking effect before the market open on September 21.
Sector Trends and Market Movers
Sector performance diverged late in the week, with Technology up 0.44%, Industrials up 0.22%), and Utilities up 0.12%, all outperforming broader defensive and consumer segments. Individual movers included semiconductor and connectivity firm Astera Labs, which advanced 10% on a rebound from its recent lows. SanDisk rose 7% amid continued memory market recovery and capital expenditures dedicated to artificial intelligence hardware. Entertainment operator AMC gained 7.3% following distribution partnership announcements.
Investor Sentiment and Outlook
In the near term, investors remain focused on the persistence of elevated yields and the Federal Reserve's policy statement update later in the month. The immediate question is whether sticky labor data will delay monetary easing or signal sufficient economic durability to support earnings growth.
Over the long term, institutional allocators are weighing whether valuation trends will prompt a more durable rotation from crowded large-cap leadership into small- and mid-cap equities. For small caps to sustain an extended breakout, market participants are monitoring whether balance sheet refinancing pressures subside and whether corporate earnings strength broadens beyond technology hardware and digital infrastructure.
